Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows part of the millwrights' shop, where the machinery in the mill was maintained. The machine seen here is a belt-driven shafting lathe, used for turning the drive shafts in the mill. Here it is being used to true up a roller. This lathe was probably installed when the mill was built. Mills generally had workshops in which routine maintenance of plant and machinery could be carried out. The term millwrighting really refers to the making and repair of the power transmission equipment in the mill, but by extension covered thee repair of other machinery.
