Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows part of the millwrights' shop, where the machinery in the mill was maintained. The machine seen here is a simple wood-bed lathe, with the pieces of wood which form the bed supported on cast iron standards. Such lathes were very rare by the 1960s. Mills generally had workshops in which routine maintenance of plant and machinery could be carried out. The term millwrighting really refers to the making and repair of the power transmission equipment in the mill, but by extension covered thee repair of other machinery.
