Scope and Content Ceiling light on main concourse of Phase I, Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows a decorative light fitting in the main shopping area of the building. A series of metal tubes of various sized hang down, some are lit from above, and others illuminated by globe-shaped bulbs on stems. The light fitting is bordered and set within a lowered ceiling. Sculptural fittings, like the shiny metal tubes in this example of decorative lighting, contrast with the textures on the walls and ceilings to add interest to the overall design. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
