Scope and Content Relief decoration on the south-east wall of ground floor in south car park, Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows an abstract pattern cast into the concrete wall of the car park below the Town Centre complex. Combinations of circles and rectangles have been used to add interest and texture to the wall's surface. The ceiling has been cast in a grid pattern resembling coffering (deep panels in a ceiling). Concrete surfaces throughout Cumbernauld were cast to create varied textures to contrast with other building materials used. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
