Scope and Content South approach ramp leading to Phase I of the Town Centre from south-east, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows one of the ramps, its wall curving up to provide shelter, which takes pedestrians into the heart of the Town Centre. This central building presents a variety of glazed sections, some of which were originally intended to be open to the air, topped by a long row of penthouse flats on concrete supports. There are many ways to reach the Town Centre: visitors can drive into the building and park in the two levels of car park, arrive by bus from the central carriageways, or walk into the centre on the covered or open walkways. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
