Scope and Content Drawing of a design for the members' sitting room. The New Club, Nos 84-7 Princes Street, Edinburgh This shows a design for the new members sitting room. The space is open and airy, and is shown furnished with comfortable wing chairs, side tables, and large framed paintings in ornate frames. The height of the room is emphasised by angular columns and uprights at the windows. The exterior features reinforced concrete, plate glass and Rubislaw granite facings, with ground-floor shops and a cantilevered walkway at first-floor level. The walkway was designed to connect with other buildings along Princes Street to create a second street. This was part of a plan by the Princes Street Panel in 1958, which was never completely realised. The five-storeyed New Club was built 1966-9 to designs by architect Alan Reiach & Partners to replace an earlier building by architect William Burn (1789-1870). Interiors created by architect David Bryce (1803-76) in 1859 and Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) were partially reconstructed in the new building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
