Scope and Content Entrance of Drumadoon from the north, No 17 Upper Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Drumadoon, a large Scottish Arts and Crafts-style villa, was built 1901-3 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). Built to overlook the Clyde estuary, it presents an impressive façade of red sandstone, half-timbering and harled details. It was converted into a nursing home in the late 20th century. This shows the arched entrance doorway within a Gothic surround with its decorative carved stone foliage. The flanking columns feature a naturalistically-carved dog and cat, whilst male and female figures crouch below, watching over the doorway. Small concrete lions guard the entrance steps. This grand entrance draws upon the picturesque details found on medieval buildings for its inspiration. Carved stone figures, animals and foliate motifs are often found in the decoration of ecclesiastical buildings where they enrich both interior and exterior walls.
