Scope and Content Specimen façade, Nos 51-75 Philpingstone Road, Bo'ness, Falkirk These two-storeyed terraced flatted cottages with attics were built c.1890-5 to designs by architect John More Dick Peddie (1853-1921). Each pair of cottages has front doors to the lower flats and outside stairs to the upper flats at the rear. The houses were demolished c.1980-90. This shows the façade with its paired doors and windows with smooth margins contrasting with the dark harled rubble walls. The doorways are linked by a curving cement hood with bullseye windows above. Tripartite dormer windows light the attic rooms. These cottages were built to house the workers of the Bo'ness Iron Foundry, a company which began working as the firm of Steele, Miller and Co. in 1836. Bo'ness was also the site of Ballantine's New Grange Foundry, established in 1856. These companies produced a variety of products including kitchen ranges, manhole covers and harpoons for the whaling industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
