Scope and Content Carved angel on a corbel in dining room of The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This carved stone angel corbel is one of several which support the ceiling in the dining room of the villa. The robustly-modelled angel holds cymbals and wears a robe with a scalloped edge. The wings and cymbals have been gilded to add richness to the design. The top of the corbel is decorated by a row of circular ornaments. This angel is complemented by three further corbels. These are carved with an angel with a harp, a personification of 'Summer' decked out in flowers, and a figure representing 'Autumn', bearing grapes. Their imposing style refers back to medieval decorative sculpture. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
