Scope and Content Stained glass window in the hall of The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This shows the stained glass window within the arched hall window. The central circle contains a monogram which includes the letters 'I C'. This refers to the original owner of the house, Provost Corsar. The larger sections of glass feature hand-painted flowers in medieval style. The style of this window with its stained glass refers back to medieval ecclesiastical architecture. 19th-century Gothic Revival architects and designers recreated the rich layering of decorative features found in church buildings to appeal to their clients' love of historical decoration.
