Scope and Content Cargo liner at Princes Pier, Greenock, Inverclyde Princes Pier was originally built as the terminus of a branch line from Elderslie, constructed to give the Glasgow & South Western Railway a steamer pier on the lower River Clyde. It closed as a steamer pier in 1959 and the pier was then briefly used by tenders to liners calling at the Tail of the Bank. This shows a newly-built cargo liner constructed by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd for the Leith-based Ben Line, berthed at the pier. By that time the elaborate pier buildings had been demolished. Princes Pier was demolished in the late 1960s to make way for the Clyde Container Terminal, which opened in 1969. Containerisation also greatly reduced the demand for general cargo ships like the one in this view. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
