Scope and Content Bedroom, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This white room has a ribbed ceiling, painted panelled walls and a bedroom suite consisting of washstand, towel rail and chairs with upholstered seats. The chimneypiece has a cornice with Classical detailing, and an overmantel with built-in glazed cupboards for ornaments. The bedstead is of iron and brass. In the 1890s, bedroom suites were available from leading house furnishers such as Wylie & Lochhead whose showrooms displayed a huge range of styles and complete room settings. This high-profile company offered an all-in advisory service aimed at a largely middle-class, female clientele. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
