Scope and Content Bedroom, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This room has a wallpaper-panelled ceiling, and a frieze with a bold stylised Classical anthemion pattern. The mirrored chimneypiece probably dates from the earlier part of the house, and the half-canopied bed, a style more common in the 1840s than the 1890s, is draped in fringed and tasselled material. In the 1890s the list of articles to be used on a bed included a horsehair or wool mattress, a bolster, two or three pillows, a quilt or counterpane, blankets, and a 'watch pocket', an embroidered material bag that hung at the head of the bed to keep watches at hand at night before alarm clocks were in general use.
