Scope and Content Morning Room, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. The morning room, in the original part of the house, has a simple cornice and a splendid 'sunburst' ceiling rose. It has a Georgian sideboard recess (left) although the sideboard itself dates from the 1890s. The chairs lined along the wall may be part of the family's 'old' drawing-room furniture. The Victorian morning room was closely associated with the drawing room in its style of decoration, although it was likely to be less formal since it was used for private activities such as reading or having breakfast and other light meals rather than polite entertaining.
