Scope and Content Main Staircase, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This 17th-century style wooden staircase, possibly in oak, has massive ornamented newel posts surmounted by bronze figures. The furnishings of the stair hall are something of an eclectic mix, with a bearskin rug, a huge plate-stand (on the half-landing) and an elaborate ornamental Chinese junk (left). John Clark was senior partner in the family threadmaking firm, Anchor Thread Mills, Paisley, one of the largest cotton thread manufacturing companies in the world. He also became a great public benefactor, donating money to build a hospital and church in Largs, and was a prolific collector of art. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
