Scope and Content Garden, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812 for Dr John Cairnie, and extended in 1892 by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, for its then owner, the Paisley threadmaker, John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the garden in 1893. The house stood in a small estate of woodland close to the shore. Within the grounds, Dr Cairnie constructed one of the first artificial curling ponds ever made in Scotland (behind trees, left). A red flag flying from the flag-pole indicated when curling was in progress. Dr John Cairnie, a curling enthusiast, founded the Largs Curling Club in 1812, and, in 1838, established the Royal Caledonian Curling Club which is still, today, the governing body of world curling. His essay on 'Curling and Artificial Pond Making' was published in 1833. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
