Scope and Content Billiard Room, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This room has a Jacobean-style panelled ceiling and inglenook fireplace, and a large bow window with stained glass panels. The massive billiard table is lit by carefully positioned electric light fittings, with a ventilation grille in the ceiling above to disperse cigar smoke. The billiard room was part of the male domain of the household and was usually panelled and decorated in a heavy style. The room was often isolated in its own wing, with a floor strong enough to support the heavy table, and at a sufficient distance to prevent cigarette and cigar smoke penetrating into the family rooms.
