Scope and Content Dining Room, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This 17th-century style dining room has an elaborately panelled ceiling and dado, and walls hung with an interesting collection of paintings. The walls have an unusual recessed sideboard (right), and an unbroken line of chairs which indicates that the room could, on occasion, accommodate over 20 guests. The Victorian dining room was regarded as a masculine room, and was often wood panelled. Its design was more formal and restrained than the feminine drawing room, with 'solid' and unadorned materials, plain oak or mahogany furniture and leather-covered chairs.
