Scope and Content Phase I from the south, Cumbernauld Town Centre, Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows the central structure of the Town Centre which features a varied arrangement of glazed areas (many of which were originally open to the elements), brick walls, and the widespread use of moulded concrete. The top floor of the long structure on its concrete leg was originally used as penthouse flats, but later converted to offices. Long pedestrian walkways and ramps can be seen leading into the building from the right. The Town Centre was renovated and altered 1983-5, and many areas of raw concrete were painted over. When the complex was originally constructed many different patterns and textures were moulded into the concrete to create contrasting surfaces to be appreciated in their own right. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
