Scope and Content Aerial view of University of Edinburgh, George Square, Edinburgh George Square was selected for the extension of the University of Edinburgh in the late 1940s. Several large new buildings and towers were constructed during the 1960s, to designs by the following architects: Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson with Andrew Merrylees (Main Library); Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners (David Hume Tower, William Robertson Building, Adam Ferguson Building and the George Square Theatre); and Alan Reiach, Eric Hall & Partners (Appleton Tower). This aerial view shows the major developments constructed during the 1960s towering above the surviving Georgian buildings in the square. The buildings are linked by a raised pavement above lecture rooms and parking areas. The large building (top left of the square) is the Library (1965-7), the smaller building below is George Square Theatre (1964-7). The tower (bottom left) is David Hume Tower (1960-3), the L-shaped building adjacent is the William Robertson Building (1964-7), and the tall structure (bottom right) is Appleton Tower (1963-6). By the time these large blocks were constructed to provide lecture rooms and libraries for the growing numbers of staff and students, an earlier plan to redevelop the wider area around the University was abandoned due to lack of funds. Raised walkways for pedestrians over roads and parking areas were to have been built around the whole area, but were completed only around two sides of the square. The University of Edinburgh George Square Redevelopment has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
