Scope and Content Library, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders Ravenswood, a large mansion house in an estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was built in 1827 and enlarged in the 1860s. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, photographed the library in 1893. This room has a richly decorated plasterwork frieze, and walls lined with wainscot panelling. The fitted bookshelves between the windows, and the large overmantel above the chimneypiece, complement the panelling. The windows extend almost to floor level to take full advantage of the views. In the Victorian household, the library was regarded as part of the male domain, and was usually panelled with dark wood. Here, the room probably combined the functions of library with those of smoking room and study, becoming an all-purpose male room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
