Scope and Content Carronvale House, Larbert, Falkirk, from the north Carronvale House, a country house dating from the 18th century, was extensively remodelled in 1897 by Sir John Burnet & Son for George Sherriff. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house c.1900. This long, two-storeyed house is harled with ashlar dressings, and has a low pitched red tiled roof. It was planned around a small internal court, and a ground-floor verandah, with Neo-Georgian details, extends along the west and north sides. George Sherriff inherited the Carronvale estate in the 1890s from his father, John Bell Sherriff. His grandfather, also George Sherriff, was an engineer of some note who had been trained by James Watt, the inventor and developer of the steam engine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
