Scope and Content East Wing, The Sick Children's Hospital (now the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Sick Children), Sciennes Road, Edinburgh The Sick Children's Hospital, Edinburgh's first hospital to deal exclusively with children's ailments, was designed in 1892 by the architect, George Washington Browne. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, photographed the building c.1900. The east wing has three floors of long, south-facing wards which open out onto balconies formed between the two octagonal towers. The first-floor balcony becomes a charming loggia, a sheltered space behind the colonnade for children to sit in the sun. The eminent clinician, Dr Joseph Bell, became the first surgeon to operate in the newly created Department of Surgery at the hospital. Bell was the model for Sherlock Holmes, the fictional character created by the author, Arthur Conan Doyle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
