Scope and Content Hallway, Craighouse Mental Asylum, Craighouse Road, Edinburgh (latterly the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and presently part of Napier University) Craighouse Mental Asylum, a huge chateau designed by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, was built in 1889-94 as new hospital premises for the Royal Edinburgh Asylum. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. This top-lit hallway, divided along its length by arches which rise from panelled pilasters, has a small chimneypiece set into the corner of a large recess. The walls have a patterned paper above the dado rail, and a heavily embossed paper frieze. Craighouse was designed as a home, rather than an asylum, for the treatment of patients' physical and mental needs. Accommodation provided 'attractive and harmonious décor', menus were carefully planned, and the patients were encouraged to attend social functions and take up outdoor pursuits.
