Scope and Content Drawing Room, Craighouse Mental Asylum, Craighouse Road, Edinburgh (latterly the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and presently part of Napier University) Craighouse Mental Asylum, a huge chateau designed by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, was built in 1889-94 as new hospital premises for the Royal Edinburgh Asylum. The drawing room, one of the hospital's magnificent public rooms, was photographed in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This huge room, designed on a grand scale, has an elegant compartmentalised ceiling. The walls are lined with moulded panels of a richly textured paper with panels of elegant Adamesque plasterwork above. There are two large chimneypieces, both with mirrored overmantels. The room, described as having 'an air of excellence and refinement which would not have been out of place in a nobleman's mansion', was where patients met regularly for group therapy. It was light and airy, and decorated in bright and cheerful colours, factors which were considered most therapeutic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
