Scope and Content Dining Room, No 1 Park Gardens, Glasgow No 1 Park Gardens, one of six houses in a short Italianate terrace designed c.1855 by the architect, Charles Wilson, on the slopes of Woodlands Hill, was redecorated c.1900 as a townhouse for Lord Inverclyde. The photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1909. The dining room has walls lined with 17th-century style wood (wainscot) panelling decorated with Ionic pilasters, and attached by a Classical cornice to the ceiling. The panelled double doors (behind the screen) complement the wainscoting. The ceiling has an outer oval of elaborate plasterwork detail. In the 17th century, wood panelling in oak or walnut was a fashionable form of wall lining, and was regarded as an item of furniture which could be removed and transported whenever its owner moved house. In wealthy households, it was often decorated with motifs from heraldry, moral themes or Classical orders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
