Scope and Content Summer House, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders The summer house at Ravenswood, a large estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was designed c.1892 by the architect, John Starforth. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building in 1893. This unusual stone-built house, perched on a hilltop in an idyllic woodland setting, has tall chimneys, and a steeply pitched pantiled roof with cast iron crestings on the roof ridges. The entrance is surmounted by a triangular pediment, topped by a ball finial. This Victorian garden house was designed to take full advantage of the views over the valley of the River Tweed to the north (left). It was probably used mainly by ladies as a pleasant place for taking tea, or for sitting in, well protected from the damaging effects of sun and wind on the skin.
