Scope and Content Summer House, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders The summer house at Ravenswood, a large estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was designed c.1892 by the architect, John Starforth. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building in 1893. This charming little stone-built house, with tall chimneys and a steeply pitched pantiled roof, stands on a hilltop site overlooking the river valley. It has a large stone pediment topped by a ball finial over the door, and elaborate cast iron crestings on the roof ridges. The Victorian summer house, a type of garden or 'inside out' room, was popular throughout the 19th century, and was generally used as a pleasant area for sitting, taking tea and looking out into the garden. Its design often reflected the style of garden that surrounded it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
