Scope and Content Summer House, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders The summer house at Ravenswood, a large estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was designed c.1892 by the architect, John Starforth. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building in 1893. This unusual hexagonal stone-built house has tall chimneys and a steeply pitched pantiled roof with elaborate cast iron crestings on the roof ridges. It sits perched on a hill in a woodland setting with a large arched window in the north face (right) to take full advantage of the views over the river. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) worked under commission for architects, photographing and recording their work shortly after it was completed. It was unusual to have any figures (as here, left) in his pictures due to the lengthy duration of the exposure required. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
