Scope and Content Summer House, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders The summer house at Ravenswood, a large estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was designed c.1892 by the architect, John Starforth. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This unusual hexagonal house has a large stone chimneypiece, and a dado of patterned, highly glazed tiles edged by a tiled dado rail. The windows, lined with panelled shutters, have colourful stained glass in their upper panes. The floor has a covering of decorative encaustic tiles laid in a geometric pattern. The Victorian summer house, a garden or 'inside out' room, was popular during the 19th century, providing a pleasant area for sitting, reading, taking tea and looking out into the garden. Here, its unusual design takes full advantage of its hilltop site overlooking the valley of the River Tweed below. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
