Scope and Content Summer House, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders The summer house at Ravenswood, a large estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was designed c.1892 by the architect, John Starforth. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This six-sided house has a multi-panelled front door, and windows with upper panels of colourful stained glass. The walls have a tiled dado and a tiled dado rail which is continued as a border above the stone chimneypiece. The floor is laid with decorative encaustic tiles in geometric patterns. The Victorian summer house was popular throughout the 19th century, particularly with wealthy landowners who might build a little tea-house or garden room as a pleasant area to sit in and look out at the surroundings, and where ladies were protected from the damaging effects of sun and wind on the skin.
