Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, No 26 George Street and Nos 53-5 Hanover Street, Edinburgh (now part of the Royal Society of Edinburgh) The Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, a commercial office on the corner of George Street and Hanover Street, was designed in 1908-9 in an Edwardian Renaissance style by the architect, John More Dick Peddie. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1909. This imposing entrance hall, panelled to above door height, has a cornice of unornamented modillions, and a marble floor laid in bold geometric patterns. Roman Doric columns of pavanazzo marble support the superstructure. The company occupied the whole of the ground floor and basement, and the greater part of the first floor of the building. The strong rooms and safe deposit boxes were located in the basement, and the ground floor contained a large business hall. The board room and manager's office were on the first floor.
