Scope and Content View from south-south-west of Red Tower, Douglas Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Red Tower was built in 1898 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). It comprises a two-storey and attic Franco-Scottish Renaissance-style villa with Old English details. Originally built for wealthy provision merchant James Allan, the house is now converted for use as a drug rehabilitation centre. This shows the doorway highlighted by a Renaissance-style porch with balustrade above protecting barge-boarded, half-timbered gable dormers. A three-stage tower with conical roof rises to the left. Right of the front door is a balcony on stone brackets, and another dormer rises from the roof above. To the far right is a canted bay projecting from a hipped gable. In the gardens of this house is an ornamental wellhead of stone with a wrought-iron overthrow with fleur de lys finial. This was not built to provide a water supply, but rather to suggest the age of the property and create a picturesque focal point for the gardens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
