Scope and Content Detail of hall fireplace, Red Tower, Douglas Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Red Tower was built in 1898 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). It comprises a two-storeyed and attic Franco-Scottish Renaissance-style villa with Old English details. Originally built for wealthy provision merchant James Allan, the house is now converted for use as a drug rehabilitation centre. This shows the fireplace in the hall, set into elaborate kauri pine panelling and framed by a pilastered surround. The fireplace itself is of carved stone with deep mouldings and emphasised corners, and includes a built-in stone fender. Above the fire is a framed area for the display of a painting. A prominent fireplace in the hall was a necessary feature of most large 19th-and early 20th-century houses. Upon arrival, guests would warm themselves by the fire whilst servants collected their cloaks. They would then be escorted to the drawing room to meet their hosts.
