Scope and Content View from east of Rockland, No 150 Clyde Street East, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Rockland is a Greek Classical-style villa built in 1854 to designs by architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75). It is built from grey, red and cream rubble masonry with cream ashlar dressings. The service buildings and kitchen were converted into a separate dwelling in the late 20th century. This shows the house with its long, low service wing (left) with central advanced bay. The five part window with stone mullions is balanced by the first-floor window on the advanced bay (right). A sunburst window is placed in the gable below the deep eaves topped by acroteria (roof ornaments). Alexander 'Greek' Thomson gained his nickname due to his love of the proportions and Classical style of Greek architectural forms. He used these to great effect in his many commissions, mostly in the vicinity of Glasgow itself, where he worked on churches, warehouses and mansions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
