Scope and Content View of 'Savaspace' bath in 'down' position in the cupboard in the laundry, Brantwoode, No 4 Munro Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Brantwoode, an L-plan, asymmetrical villa was built in 1895 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). The two-storeyed house is built from red sandstone with red tile-hangings, mock half-timbering and leaded windows. The interior layout includes an inter-connecting library, living hall and dining room. This shows the 'Savaspace' sheet steel bath in its down position in the cupboard under the stairs in the laundry. It was probably placed here for servant's use. The bath pivots up on its waste pipe, and the taps swing over the bath and fold out of the way when not in use. The bath's position near the boiler for the laundry ensures a good supply of hot water. Various ingenious types of bath were invented in the Edwardian period, for example, tip-up baths, sunken baths concealed below the floor in flats, 'Sitz' baths like hollow cast-iron armchairs and combined basins and baths designed to share the same set of taps.
