Scope and Content View of 'Savaspace' bath in 'up' position in cupboard in the laundry, Brantwoode, No 4 Munro Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Brantwoode, an L-plan, asymmetrical villa was built in 1895 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). The two-storeyed house is built from red sandstone with red tile-hangings, mock half-timbering and leaded windows. The interior layout includes an inter-connecting library, living hall and dining room. This shows a sheet steel bath which pivots on its waste pipe, in its 'up' position, with taps folded flat against the wall. When not in use it is hidden behind a door below the stairs. A handle is attached to the top of the bath to help the user pull it down. This bath is situated in the laundry of the house, and its position in the service area indicates it was probably used by the servants. The bath would be well-supplied from the boiler which heated water for washing clothes. It is a great improvement on portable tin baths which had to be filled by hand and placed before a fire to keep them warm. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
