Scope and Content View from west of hall, Brantwoode, No 4 Munro Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Brantwoode, an L-plan, asymmetrical villa was built in 1895 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). The two-storeyed house is built from red sandstone with red tile-hangings, mock half-timbering and leaded windows. The interior layout includes an inter-connecting library, living hall and dining room. This shows the hall with its carved stone fireplace bearing the motto: 'IN THE WORLD A HOME, IN THE HOME MY WORLD'. A large, arched window next to the fireplace has stone mullions (divisions between the glazing) and leaded window glass. A timber archway echoes the shape of the window, and leads to the staircase. A prominent fireplace in the hall was a necessary feature of most large 19th-century houses. Upon arrival, guests would warm themselves by the fire whilst servants collected their cloaks. They would then be escorted to the drawing room to meet their hosts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
