Scope and Content View from south-west of Rockland Lodge, Rockland, No 150 Clyde Street East, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Rockland Lodge, built 1854, is attributed to architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75), who designed the main house, Rockland. It is a single-storeyed house with attic built from cream limestone with smooth ashlar dressings. An attic storey was added in 1881 by architect T L Watson. This shows the lodge with its wooden verandah with ornamental fretwork spandrels sheltering the doorway. In the gable (left) is a bipartite attic window divided by a stone pilaster under the deep eaves. The cast iron gates can be seen (far left). Alexander 'Greek' Thomson gained his nickname due to his love of the proportions and Classical style of Greek architectural forms. He used these to great effect in his many commissions, mostly in the vicinity of Glasgow itself, where he worked on churches, warehouses and mansions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
