Scope and Content View from west of staircase from half-landing, Rockland, No 150 Clyde Street East, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Rockland was built in 1854 to designs by Glasgow architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75). It is a two-storeyed, symmetrical, T-plan house in the Greek Classical style. A service wing and kitchen to the rear was converted to a separate residence in the late 20th century. This shows the staircase with its pilastered walls and decorative frieze details. The 'dog-leg' (turning back on itself) stair has shallow steps and a fine bronze balustrade supported by wooden posts. The design includes palmettes (stylised leaves) suspended from curled supports over a fret design. Alexander 'Greek' Thomson gained his nickname due to his love of the proportions and Classical style of Greek architectural forms. He used these to great effect in his many commissions, mostly in the vicinity of Glasgow itself, where he worked on churches, warehouses and mansions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
