Scope and Content Manager's Office, Union Bank of Scotland, Nos 110-20 St Vincent Street, Glasgow (now the Bank of Scotland) The Union Bank of Scotland, the head office of the bank in Glasgow, was designed in 1925-7 in an American Classical style by the Glasgow architect, James Miller. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1927. This room, influenced in its design by the interiors of American bank buildings, is screened from the entrance hall by glazed wooden partitions, and lit by large metal-framed windows. The furnishings include a table and chairs with Queen Anne-style cabriole legs. The bank, originally established as the Glasgow Union Banking Company in 1830, became known as the Union Bank of Scotland in 1843. Its fortunes were closely tied to Glasgow's industry, particularly textiles, iron, coal, shipbuilding and railways, and it also maintained a corresponding head office in Edinburgh.
