Scope and Content Union Bank of Scotland, Nos 110-20 St Vincent Street, Glasgow, from Renfield Street (now the Bank of Scotland) The Union Bank of Scotland, an American Classical-style building which stands on the corner of St Vincent Street and Renfield Street, was designed in 1925-7 by the Glasgow architect, James Miller. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the exterior in 1927. This impressive, seven-storeyed building has a raised ground floor and basement level. The St Vincent Street façade is dominated by a colonnade of giant Greek Ionic columns that embrace the first two floors, dwarfing passers-by. The front to Renfield Street (right) has giant pilasters instead of columns. The commission for the bank was won as the result of a competition, and Miller was sufficiently proud of the design that he submitted it as his Diploma work for the Royal Scottish Academy when he stood for election as an Academician in 1930.
