Scope and Content View from north of Cairndhu, Rhu Road Lower, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Cairndhu, a two-storeyed villa, was built in 1871 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916), the service wing was extended in 1902. The interior was decorated by artist Daniel Cottier (1838-91), and includes Japanese-style painted ceilings and fine stained glass panels. It was converted to a hotel in 1956, and a residential home in 1984. This shows the entrance front with its columned porch (right) with a balustrade above. This is repeated above the advanced bay, which has a gable-head dormer with sculpted tympanum above. The roof features two further gableted dormers. A circular stair-tower is linked to a tower with French pavilion roof, lantern top, shaped gable with finials and balustraded balcony below. William Leiper began working in Helensburgh in 1870 after moving there from Glasgow. He worked on many fine buildings, ecclesiastical, commercial and domestic, but is best remembered for the remarkable Venetian façade of Templeton's carpet factory, in Glasgow, built in 1889.
