Scope and Content First-floor Office, Anchor Line Building, Nos 12-16 St Vincent Place, Glasgow The Anchor Line Building, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built in 1905-7 for the Anchor Line Shipping Company. This photograph of a first-floor office in the building was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This room, with a panelled dado and elaborately carved fireplace surround, shows some of the elaborate 18th-century style of decoration found in the ground-floor offices. It is simply furnished, with a handsome desk on which sits a contemporary telephone. The Anchor Line specialised in twice weekly trans-Atlantic sailings, offering first-, second- or third-class passages in large, elegant mail-steamers from Glasgow to New York or Quebec. A company advertisement for emigrants travelling third class promised 'full pension on board' in addition to 'good berthing'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
