Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Anchor Line Building, Nos 12-16 St Vincent Place, Glasgow The Anchor Line Building, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built in 1905-7 for the Anchor Line Shipping Company. This photograph of the entrance hall of the building was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. Designed with the opulence of a first-class saloon on an ocean liner, the hall is lined with oak panelling and floored in marble. The ceiling and frieze are richly decorated with exuberant 18th-century style plasterwork, and a model of one of the company's great steamships is displayed in a glass case (right). Miller's earlier designs for the luxury hotels of Peebles, Turnberry and Central Station, Glasgow, qualified him superbly for this commission. In 1907 he was appointed consultant architect for the SS Lusitania, owned by the Cunard Shipping Company, and designed many of the ship's sumptuous interiors. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
