Scope and Content Shipping Office, Anchor Line Building, Nos 12-16 St Vincent Place, Glasgow The Anchor Line Building, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built in 1905-7 for the Anchor Line Shipping Company. This photograph of the general shipping office was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has a marble floor, and oak counters and wainscot panelling. Behind the counter are the raised, sloping desks of the shipping clerks, complete with tall stools and illuminated by powerful electric lights. A sign on the counter reads 'Outward Atlantic Freight'. The Anchor Shipping Line was founded in 1856 as Handysides & Henderson, a large steamship company sailing from Glasgow to New York, and Glasgow to Quebec. It conveyed passengers to America every week in its large and elegant mail-steamers, as well as in a number of specialised emigrant ships. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
