Scope and Content Anchor Line Building, Nos 12-16 St Vincent Place, Glasgow The Anchor Line Building, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built in 1905-7 for the Anchor Line Shipping Company. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the exterior in 1909. This tall, seven-storeyed, steel-framed building is clad in white faience, glazed terracotta tiles known as Doulton Carrara ware. The entrance is through a recessed portico, and the solid balcony at second-floor level separates the lettable accommodation above from the company's offices on the lower floors. Set against the Edwardian grime of the city centre, the building is startlingly white and clean, reminiscent of the great liners that transported the company's passengers across the Atlantic. It contrasts wonderfully with the dark red sandstone façade of the Bank of England building next door (left). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
