Scope and Content Office, Anchor Line Building, Nos 12-16 St Vincent Place, Glasgow The Anchor Line Building, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built in 1905-7 for the Anchor Line Shipping Company. This photograph of an office in the building was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has an oak-panelled dado and oak fireplace surround elaborately carved with swags and fruit. The walls are lined with pictures of the company's elegant steamships, and on the desk is a contemporary telephone and an electric bell to summon clerks from the outer office (left). The company operated twice weekly sailings to America and Canada, departing from Glasgow for New York or Quebec. It also had sailings to Norway and the Mediterranean. Passengers were conveyed in large and elegant mail-steamers, which included the Scotia, Caledonia, Britannia, Scandinavia and Tuscania. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
