Scope and Content View from south-west of The Knowe, Nos 94-104 Midton Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire The Knowe is a mansion house built in 1845, in the manner of architect William Burn (1789-1870). It was extended and altered in 1895 by architect Robert Thomson (active 1878-1901), who added the Manorial-style details. The house was divided into flats in 1962 to designs by architect Robert Bluck. This shows the advanced bay-windowed section (left) with its balustrade, water spouts and pinnacles. Gableted windows at the wall-head give the building a defensive aspect. The bay (centre) has an advanced lower window, next to canted bays which rise to a tower with an ogee (S-shaped, curved) roof (right). A further square tower can also be seen far right. The many pinnacles and window arrangements and decorative features on this façade lend interest to the overall design. The rooms within the building benefit from this exterior variation by gaining interestingly varied room-plans and window shapes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
