Scope and Content Detail of entrance porch of Shalimar, Nos 19-20 Racecourse View, Ayr, South Ayrshire Shalimar was built in 1868, and altered in 1897 and 1900 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942). Built of coursed sandstone with a slated roof, it is a large, asymmetrical-plan mansion in the Scottish Baronial style with Jacobean details. This shows the canted porch with its Gibbs surround to the door (emphasised border stones) and balustrade above with obelisk finials. A stepped string-course runs above the first-floor windows, and a rope-moulding runs below the crenellations at the wall-head. A small turret can be seen next to the crowstepped gable to the canted bay (right). Two stone lions guard the front door to the mansion. These traditional ornaments emphasise the ornate doorpiece and its castle-like decorative features whilst symbolically protecting the house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
